Banks have opened 52.9 million accounts under the Jan Dhan Yojana, of which 31.2 million are in rural and 21.7 million are in urban areas. RuPay cards have been issued for 17.8 million accounts, the government announced today.
The mission director for the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana reviewed the progress of the scheme with directors of state-owned banks and some private banks like Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Indusind Bank.
Banks were told to increase their capacity of issuance of the RuPay card to clear the backlog. Most banks expect the backlog to be cleared by October 15, some said it would take four weeks.
Surveys for identifying uncovered households will be completed by October 10, except in Haryana and Maharashtra, where work has been suspended for Assembly elections.
Puducherry and Chandigarh and two districts, Mehsana and Porbandar in Gujarat, have covered all households.
